COTA Inspires Future Tourism Leaders with Essay Contest and Conference Trip Giveaway

Jun 27, 2023

Oujé-Bougoumou, June 27, 2023 – Cree adults considering a career in tourism now have the chance to win an all-expense paid trip to the International Indigenous Tourism Conference in Ottawa this February, thanks to an essay contest organized by the Cree Outfitting and Tourism Association (COTA).

The contest aims to inspire post-secondary students, entrepreneurs, and others in Eeyou Istchee to envision their future in the region’s growing Indigenous tourism industry. Participants are invited to submit an essay of 500-750 words, choosing from three thought-provoking topics:

  • Why should I be chosen to attend the Indigenous Tourism Conference?
  • What makes Eeyou Istchee a “must-see” tourism destination?
  • Why is a career in tourism the right choice for me?

The writer of the winning essay will receive a prize package that includes tickets to the conference, accommodations, and travel expenses. The winner will also share their passion and ambitions in a special feature in the COTA newsletter.

Entrants must be Cree beneficiaries aged 18 years or older, and the deadline to submit essays is August 23, 2023.

“Encouraging the next generation of tourism leaders is so important – not just for COTA, but for the entire Cree Nation. Study after study shows that travellers are more interested in Indigenous experiences than ever before. Whoever attends the conference will be astounded at the opportunities before us. That’s why supporting talented Cree people who can nurture, innovate and grow Eeyou Istchee’s sustainable tourism industry is one of COTA’s top priorities.”

Robin McGinley, Director of COTA.

COTA and their partner organization, Eeyou Istchee Tourism (EIT), have several services and initiatives to support Cree beneficiaries who want to pursue a career in tourism. In addition to this essay contest, COTA offers a post-secondary bursary. COTA and EIT can also assist students in finding internships and entry-level jobs in tourism. Those who wish to open a tourism business can access even more support as COTA/EIT members.
